Three members of an extended Afghan family begin their new lives as refugees in Iran, unaware that they face a decades-long struggle to be “home.” Saw the film at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Told in three stories, In the Land of Brothers manages to capture the essence, complications, and heartbreaking scenarios of political conflict, relationships, culture, and the harshness of reality. The filmmakers managed to capture the themes, tone, and writing style for each of the three stories with good emotions, interesting characters, and moments that felt tense and depressing without coming across as cheesy and over the top. Each of the characters and writing style is handled with maturity, and the performances of the cast are all good. Really brought out the emotions between the characters and the core of the film’s message and intent. The cinematography, production designs, and soundtrack are beautiful. There were touching moments, and I felt sad when I watched it. For me, the first and third stories remain the most impactful. The second one has a few weaknesses in terms of pacing, but was still good. Overall, the film is another good Iranian film.
